Making hair and clothing textures in IMVU is fun and exciting, having engaged in it myself as a hobby, I don’t get bored sitting down glued to my computer screen for hours at a stretch, trying out different colors of hair on avatars.
If you’re a beginner and would like to learn how I do it read the steps below, but if you are good at creating textures and would love to know how to get the best designs, read the last section of the post to see the offer that awaits you.
IMVU Hair Textures The Manual Route
- Open your Photoshop and go to ‘’file’’ at the top left of the screen. Click on new for image.
- Adjust the width to 256 and height of 256, then fill the background with the color of your choosing.
Go to filter, and slide down to noise. Choose HSV noise. You’d want your boldness to be 1, hue-20, saturation=0, and value=220. At this stage, you get a grasp of how your texture would turn out.
3. Go to back to filter, then choose motion blur and angle=90 degrees or something close being vertical and length =256. The stripes are going to be the texture that would appear on the hair.
4. Shine- take the rectangle picker, make a shining layer, and fill it in with what color you want, but I go with white.
5. Select none and go with a Gaussian blur. Blur at 22 or at any distance of your choice.
6. Change the layer mode to overlay then create a new layer. Select the rectangle picker again to the top part of the hair and fill it with black. Go to filter once more, and blur at 35.
7. Turn the opacity down to 50, The completed hair texture is saved as a png file then exported to creator program. You choose your avatar then click apply the change, then you are done.
I can do this because I loved it, but if you are making IMVU textures so that you can eventually put up a design for sale, you may not realize how much time you have spent when you could have focused your energy on mapping, marketing and making icons. I discovered a lot of people spend time doing this, which is counterproductive when you could get access to thousands of ready-made textures- each under two cents.
